My New Name

Oh the other big news is that I formally changed my name to William Sky Spiritdancer. I had to go to court to change it in front of all these people. It was weird. When I had actually done it I felt like I had been reborn. A new self. I feel this name represents my new spiritual self and had more meaning plus I finally cut away the ties my family has had to slavery. I know the freed slaves kept the name because they thought it would give them some kind of status. But I feel that it does matter. I mean Drake is a cool name but everyone knows it’s from slavery. I mean, I don’t look English. Plus do you know what Drake means? Its from a family named Draco who lived on a hill in England that was known as dragon hill. See: http://www.xroyvision.com.au/drake/history/hist10.htm
All drakes come from this family. And it means, as you can guess, dragon. Hmm. Not much meaning there.

Anyway, it was a liberating experience to change my name. I have to say I do have some apprehension about it though. It is a unorthodox name but when I looked in the white pages I saw tons of unorthodox names. It seems that it’s only a problem if you give it to yourself. Anyway that’s the situation. I had to think up a new signature and everything.

What does it mean? Well I feel that I am doing a Dance with God and I wanted my name to represent that.

Many people think it’s native American. I didn’t do that consciously but maybe I did subconsciously. There is a lot of Native American in my family, Cherokee from what I’ve heard but who knows. Anyway no one cared when I had an English name. So seems like at this point in my family’s history I can name myself anything I want to.
